2010: Longest In-Country Torch Relay in Olympic History

johnfurlong-olympicscarf.jpg

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler will surely be a momentous event for the citizens of this country, but we will also hold several records to go along with all the Olympic records that will surely be beat over the course of the two weeks of competitions. One such record that will be broken is that the cross-country torch relay leading up to the Games "will be the longest such in-country relay in Olympic history."

John Furlong, VANOC CEO, said that the organization is dedicated to sharing the 2010 Games with not only Vancouver and British Columbia, but also with Canadians all across this great nation of ours. VANOC went to Halifax "to symbolize the size of our country and that we are flat-out sharing these Olympic and Paralympic games with the whole country."

The total length that will be covered over the course of the cross-country torch relay is some 35,000 kilometres. This is "almost the circumference of the Earth inside Canada." More than 12,000 torchbearers will be selected by VANOC, bringing the torch to every province and territory. Furlong expects "millions of applications" for those 12,000 slots.
