2010 Games Have No Right to Play

righttoplay.jpg

Right to Play is a charitable organization that has set up booths at every Olympic Games since 1992. Championed by many of Canada's top athletes, Right to Play aims to spread the Olympic ideals in more than 20 countries around the world affected by war, poverty, and disease. Among its supporters are Wayne Gretzky, Adam van Koeverden, Jose Calderon, and Gregg Zaun. it was previously known as Olympic Aid.

Unfortunately, Right to Play will not be allowed to set up a booth at the 2010 Olympic Village, because its sponsors conflict with the official sponsors of the 2010 Games. VANOC made this decision in the interests of the agreements it has with its sponsors. VANOC feels that they would be doing their sponsors a disservice by allowing Right to Play to prominently feature its own sponsors.

The primary conflict comes from the fact that the official automobile sponsor of the 2010 Games is General Motors Canada, whereas Right to Play recently received substantial sponsorship from Mitsubishi Motors Canada.
