$14 Billion Transit and Transportation Plan for BC

rapidtransit.jpg

Premier Gordon Campbell and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon have announced a $14 billion transit and transportation strategy for the province of British Columbia, and they say that it is a "key measure in the province's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

The largest part of the $14 billion involved is the $10.3 billion investment in four new rapid transit lines for the greater Vancouver area. You already know about the Canada Line that will connect Downtown Vancouver with Richmond and the Airport, but they also plan on setting three more rapid transit lines that will reduce congestion and improve greenhouse gas emissions. These are the Evergreen Line (serving the tri-cities), the UBC Line, and the upgraded Expo Line.

A new energy-efficient, high-capacity RapidBus BC service will run along nine major routes in Victoria, Metro Vancouver, and Kelowna, costing the province an additional $1.2 billion. A series of 1500 clean energy buses, costing $1.6 billion including related maintenance infrastructure, will also be launched. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for 2020.
