10 cheap things to do in Vancouver

With gas prices skyrocketing, many Vancouverites are choosing to stay at home this summer, rather than blow the budget by filling the tank. But exploring your own city can also be expensive, since sitting on Kits Beach is fine for an afternoon, but probably won't keep the kids entertained all summer.

Here's a list of the top ten things to do on the cheap in our great city, as recommended by Tourism Vancouver:

  1. Visit North Vancouver's Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre.

  2. Find a movie set and watch a movie being made on the streets, or try to spot a celebrity. You can see what's currently in production on the BC Film Commission website.

  3. Explore the rainforest at Lighthouse Park on the North Shore. You'll see some of Vancouver's oldest trees.

  4. Hike the Grouse Grind. (Ugh, I did this one once, and it will not be on my list of things to try again! But, hey -- you might love it ;-)

  5. Swim at an outdoor public pool. Kitsilano Pool is one of the largest heated saltwater pools in Canada and is open May to September. Or check out Stanley Park's Second Beach pool.

  6. See the circle of life in action at North Vancouver's Capilano Salmon Hatchery. Juvenile salmon are raised on site, and you can see them before they return to the river. During the fall, returning salmon struggle up the fish ladders to spawn.

  7. The False Creek Aquabus can be more than just transportation. Get on one for a leisurely cruise around False Creek.

  8. Get out your bike! There are great bike trails at UBC's Pacific Spirit Regional Park, the seawall, or atop Richmond's western dike to the old fishing village of Steveston.

  9. Check out Buntzen Lake in Burnaby. It's a tranquil natural reservoir surrounded on three sides by steep, forested crags.

  10. Visit Vanier Park's Vancouver Maritime Museum. Among other seafaring displays, you'll find the dry-docked RCMP ship St. Roch, the first vessel to navigate the Northwest Passage in both directions.
